Bhagavad Gita 2.24

Meaning · English

This soul cannot be broken or burned, cannot be dampened or dried. It is everlasting, all-pervading, unalterable, immutable, and primordial.

Krishna stacks up words here, and a few of them carry the weight. Nitya means lasting through time, with no end to point to. Sarva-gata means going everywhere, present in every place. Sthanu is a post or pillar, something that stays where it is. Sanatana means primordial: it was there before anything began. The first half repeats the line before it: nothing cuts the soul, burns it, soaks it or dries it. The second half moves from what cannot happen to it to what it is: unalterable, immutable, everlasting. His reason is Arjuna's grief. Arjuna has put down his bow because he cannot bear to watch teachers and kinsmen die. Krishna answers that what Arjuna fears losing is not the kind of thing that can be lost. He asks Arjuna to look again at who a person is, so that sorrow is not aimed at the wrong thing. The commentators differ on details. Shankara reads all-pervading as the one Self present in everything. Ramanuja holds that souls are many, and reads the word as the soul's reach into every body and state it enters. Madhva holds that souls stay forever distinct from God and dependent on Him, so these words describe the soul's lasting nature, not sameness with Him.

A storm crosses the sky. Clouds gather, rain falls, lightning cracks, and then it all clears. The sky was never soaked, scorched or shifted, and it was over every street the whole time. The storm maps to everything that happens to a body and a life. The sky maps to the soul that Krishna describes.

1. Tonight, take two minutes and name three things about yourself that have changed since you were ten: your height, your opinions, your friends. 2. Then ask what has stayed the same, the one who noticed all those changes. Just notice; do not argue it either way. 3. Next time something breaks, spills or goes wrong today, pause for one breath and say to yourself, 'That happened to a thing, and I am watching it.'

A man of sixty stands at his daughter's wedding and catches himself in a mirror. The hair is grey, the knees ache, and the face is not the one from his own wedding day. Yet the one looking out still feels like the same person who stood there then. Step by step, the verse would change what he does with that moment. He would notice the changes in the body without taking them for a loss of himself. He would let the sense of being one continuous person stand as the thing Krishna points to, and treat the grey hair as weather. Ordinary experience does agree that much of the body's tissue is replaced over the years while the feeling of being the same person carries on. What the verse describes, a soul that is unbreakable and everlasting, is the text's own teaching, and it is said here as that. It does not promise that the man will feel no pang, that aching knees need no doctor, or that grief at a parting will not come. It gives him a place to stand while those things happen.
