Practice Kept Quiet
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 42.38
Meaning · English
The wise call him a true knower of Brahman who lives among his own relatives and wants his religious practice to stay unknown to them, always.
Three words carry this. Brahmana comes from Brahman, the vast reality, and the root sense is growth or expansion. Here it names a person by inner knowing, not by birth. Jnati means kinsman or relative, the people who see you every day and whose opinion is hardest to ignore. Vrata, the practice, is the vow or discipline a person keeps: prayer, fasting, restraint, study. Sanatsujata teaches that the wise recognize a knower of Brahman by one sign. He lives in the middle of his family and wants his practice kept from them. He does not hide it out of shame, and he does not stage it for praise. He is content that it stay unseen, and he keeps it that way at all times. The reason comes from the verses around it. Dhritarashtra cannot sleep, and Sanatsujata is speaking to a king who lives among people who watch him. He has just said that those who live off showing their spiritual rank are like a dog going back to its own vomit. A practice done for an audience pays out in the audience's approval, and nothing is left over. Practice kept quiet is done for its own sake, so no one has to see it for it to count.
Think of the roots of a big tree. Nobody admires them, and they sit in the dark soil, yet the whole tree stands on them. A person's hidden practice is the root, and the praise of relatives is only the leaves, which the tree can lose without falling.
1. Pick one small good practice you already keep, such as a few minutes of quiet prayer, a silent thank-you before eating, or a kind act for someone at home. 2. Do it this week without mentioning it to anyone in your family, not even lightly. 3. If you notice an urge to be seen doing it, just notice the urge for a moment and carry on. 4. At night, think briefly about whether the practice felt different when no one knew.
