The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2 · What Never Dies
Certain Both Ways
Bhagavad Gita 2.27
Meaning · English
For one who is born, death is certain; for one who has died, birth is certain. Therefore, over what cannot be avoided, you ought not to grieve.
Three words carry it. Dhruva means fixed, like a pole star that does not move. Krishna uses it twice: death is fixed for whoever is born, and birth is fixed for whoever has died. Apariharya means that which cannot be walked around. It is a road with no side path. Shochitum arhasi means grieving is not fitting, not suited to the case. The plain sense is that Krishna is pointing to a pattern with no gap in it. Birth leads to death, and death leads to birth. The reason he gives comes in the word tasmat, therefore. Grief tries to change what has already been settled, so it is a protest against something that cannot be altered. Arjuna is weeping over the deaths he expects on the field, and Krishna asks him to see that the outcome he dreads was fixed the moment each man was born. The verse asks Arjuna to stop letting sorrow decide what he does. It does not call him cold for loving them. The commentators differ. Shankara takes this as an argument for those who accept the ordinary view that a person is born and dies: even then, grief is unfitting. Ramanuja reads it as pointing to a self distinct from the body that passes through births. Madhva reads the fixed order as set by God's governance of the world.
A revolving door at a busy station. You step in, it carries you round, and you step out. Nobody stands inside it arguing with the turn. Birth and death are that turning: the movement only goes one way, and it was never open to bargaining.
1. Pick one thing today that you cannot change, such as a delayed train, a closed shop or a remark already made. 2. Say to yourself, quietly, "This is settled." Notice whether your shoulders and jaw loosen. 3. Then ask what is still yours to do, and do that one small thing. 4. This evening, think for two minutes of someone you have lost. Let the sadness come without arguing with the fact.
A granddaughter sits by her grandmother's bed in the last days, going over what the doctors said. She keeps hunting for a different answer: another specialist, another ward, another week. Her sleep is thin, and her mind runs the same loop. Krishna's words would work on her in steps. First, they name what is fixed: the old woman's life is ending, as every life does. Second, they separate that from what is not fixed, which is how she spends these days. Third, the search for a way around the unavoidable can loosen, and the hours can go to holding a hand, bringing water, sitting quietly or saying what needs saying. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: fighting a fact that will not move uses up strength that the living still need. The verse does not promise that the grief will lessen or vanish. It does not replace the doctor, the hospice nurse or a friend to talk to. It says only that grief fits the loss, and that struggling against the unavoidable does not.
