Faith Kindles the Fire

Rig Veda 10.151.1

Meaning · English

Through faith the fire is lit; through faith the offering is poured. With our words we make faith known, set at the crown of good fortune.

Faith is trust: the settled confidence that what is given will count. The seer names two acts of worship. Agni, the sacred fire that carries offerings to the gods, is kindled through faith. The oblation, the butter or grain poured into that fire, is offered through faith. Then the speakers declare faith aloud and set it at the head of good fortune. Sāyaṇa takes fortune as wealth; other readers hear the god Bhaga, who deals out shares.

A cook seasons a meal for someone she expects to come home. Another follows the same recipe for no one. Pots, flame and spices match; what differs is the expectation behind the hands. Faith sits in that place: it leaves the wood and butter unchanged and makes the act an offering.
