A Blessing on the Giver

Rig Veda 10.151.2

प्रियं श्रद्धे ददतः प्रियं श्रद्धे दिदासतः। प्रियं भोजेषु यज्वस्विदं म उदितं कृधि

Meaning · English

Faith, make it dear to the giver, dear to the one who longs to give. Make this word of mine dear among generous worshippers.

Faith is spoken to as a presence that can be asked for something. The request is that giving turn out dear, meaning welcome and good, for the one who gives. Sāyaṇa reads 'dear' as the very fruit the giver hoped for. The blessing reaches the one who has already given and the one who only intends to. Then the seer asks that her own spoken wish be made good among the generous patrons who sponsor the rite.

A person drops a letter into a postbox. Once it falls, it is out of reach, and nothing they do now will carry it further. Only trust that the post works makes letting go feel like sending, not losing. Faith does this for the giver: it turns a gift released from the hand into a gift received.

श्रद्धा, इसे दाता के लिए प्रिय कर, देने की लालसा रखने वाले के लिए प्रिय कर। उदार उपासकों के बीच मेरे इस वचन को प्रिय कर।

श्रद्धा को एक ऐसी उपस्थिति मानकर संबोधित किया गया है जिससे कुछ माँगा जा सके। प्रार्थना यह है कि देना देने वाले के लिए प्रिय सिद्ध हो, अर्थात् स्वागत-योग्य और शुभ। सायण 'प्रिय' का अर्थ वही फल लेते हैं जिसकी दाता ने आशा की थी। आशीर्वाद उस तक पहुँचता है जो दे चुका है, और उस तक जो अभी केवल देने का मन रखता है। फिर ऋषिका माँगती है कि उसका कहा हुआ वचन यज्ञ का आयोजन कराने वाले उदार यजमानों के बीच सफल हो।

कोई व्यक्ति डाकपेटी में एक पत्र डालता है। गिरते ही वह उसकी पहुँच से बाहर हो जाता है, और अब वह कुछ भी करे, उसे आगे नहीं बढ़ा सकता। केवल यह भरोसा कि डाक व्यवस्था काम करती है, छोड़ देने को खोना नहीं, भेजना बना देता है। श्रद्धा दाता के लिए यही करती है: वह हाथ से छूटे दान को ग्रहण किए गए दान में बदल देती है।
