The Eater and the Watcher

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.6

Meaning · English

Two birds, always together and friends, cling to the same tree. One of them eats the sweet fig; the other eats nothing and watches.

Two birds share one tree. They are not strangers who happen to land on the same branch: they are yoked together and they are friends. Yet they do different things. The first is busy with the fruit, tasting it and finding it sweet. The second takes nothing from the tree and keeps its eyes open, watching. The whole picture rests on that contrast: same tree, same closeness, but one is caught up in eating and the other only sees.

At a funfair, a child rides the carousel, shrieking at every rise and dip, while a parent stands at the rail watching each turn. Same ride, same afternoon, and they came together. One is inside the experience, tasting all of it; the other takes part only by looking. The two birds share that same pairing.
