Grief Lifts at Seeing

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.7

Meaning · English

On the same tree a person sinks in, bewildered, grieving his powerlessness. When he sees the other, the Lord, at peace, and his greatness, his grief is gone.

The person here is the bird that was eating the fruit. He has sunk into the tree, so taken up with what happens to him that he feels helpless and grows confused. His sorrow comes from feeling he has no mastery over anything. The cure is not effort. It is noticing. On that same tree sits the other one, the master, untroubled. When the person sees that one and takes in how great he is, the grief simply falls away.

A small child loses sight of a parent in a crowded store and starts to cry, frozen between the shelves. Then the child looks up and sees the parent standing a few steps away, calm, there the whole time. The fear came from feeling alone and powerless. Seeing the one close by ends it, though nothing else has changed.
