Where the Hymns Rest
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.8
Meaning · English
The hymns rest in the imperishable, the highest space, where all the gods sit. Without knowing That, what can hymns do? Those who know it sit here, at peace.
The hymns of the Veda are not the last word. They rest on something: the akshara, the imperishable, a word that can also mean a single syllable. The text calls it the highest space, and says every god is seated there too. So a person can know every hymn by heart and still miss what the hymns stand on. Then the question is fair: what will the hymns do for them? Those who know That are already here, seated, settled, lacking nothing.
A house has carved doors and painted rooms, and it sits on a foundation nobody sees. A guest can admire every room, learn every corner, and never once think about what holds the walls up. The rooms are the hymns and the gods. The foundation under all of them is the imperishable.
