The Magician and the Bound
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.9
Meaning · English
Hymn meters, offerings, rites, vows, past and future, all the Vedas speak of: from this the magic-maker pours out the world, and in it the other is bound by magic.
The list begins with what worship is built from: the meters of the hymns, the sacrifices, the rites, the vows people keep. Then it widens to time itself, what has been and what is coming, and to everything the Vedas describe. All of it comes out of 'this', the imperishable named just before. The one who sends it out is called a magic-maker, and the world is his display. The 'other' is the individual self, who lives inside that display and is held there by the same magic.
A magician at a fair fills his tent with colored smoke, moving lights and music. A child who walks in gets so caught up in the show that he forgets where the door is. The magician makes the show and stands free of it. The child is inside it. That is the maker of the world and the self caught in it.
