Nature Is the Spell

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.10

Meaning · English

Know nature to be the magic, and the great Lord to be the one who works it. This whole moving world is filled with beings that are pieces of him.

Two words carry the line. Maya is magic: the power to make a show appear. Prakriti is nature, the material everything is made from. The seer joins them and says nature is that magic. Then he names the one behind it, Maheshvara, the great Lord, as the magic-maker. The last line closes the gap between maker and made: the whole world is filled with beings who are his own limbs and parts. Nothing in it comes from somewhere else.

A hand held up in lamplight throws a rabbit on the wall, ears twitching. The rabbit is real as a shape, yet every bit of it is the hand: knuckles, fingers, the gap between thumbs. Nature is the shape on the wall, the Lord is the hand, and the creatures are his fingers bent into form.
