Meaning · English

Sound is made to grow by me, the boundless one, whose power has no end. In every being it is seen as an inner resonance, fine as the fibre inside a lotus stalk. A spider draws its thread up from its heart and out through its mouth. In the same way the life-breath carrying sound rises from the space of the heart, joined with the mind that takes the form of touch.

Three words carry this teaching. Ghosha is sound as a resonance, an inner hum, from a root meaning to sound aloud. Prana is the life-breath, from a root meaning to breathe forth. Akasha is space, the open room in which sound can travel. Krishna says the sound in every living creature is not a separate thing. He, the Brahman of endless power, makes it grow. It is there as a fine fibre inside a lotus stalk, which you only notice when the stalk is snapped and the thread stretches out. Then he gives a second picture. A spider spins its thread from its own body and draws it out through its mouth. So the breath, carrying sound, rises from the open space of the heart. The mind goes with it, and the verse says this mind takes the form of touch, meaning contact with things. Speech begins in this stirring of breath and mind long before a word is heard. Krishna teaches it here because he has just called the Veda deep as an ocean. He now shows where its words come from: from him, within each person. He asks the listener to see that every spoken word has its root inside, and that the root is him. The commentators read the thread as the sound passing through subtle stages before it becomes speech.

Pull one loose thread from the hem of a cloth. It comes out long and bright, yet it was always part of the cloth. The thread is sound drawn out into speech, and the cloth is Krishna, from whom it comes and in whom it stays.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes somewhere quiet, with one hand lightly on your throat. 2. Hum one low, slow note on a single breath. Notice where it seems to start, below the throat, not in the mouth. 3. Before your next real conversation, pause for one breath and notice the small stir before the first word. 4. When you finish speaking, remember that the stir came from within you.

A woman stands to say a few words at her uncle's funeral. Her throat is tight, her breath is shallow, and the first sentence comes out thin. She has the words ready, yet they will not come. Krishna's picture gives her a place to start. Speech does not begin in the mouth. It begins lower, in the breath, and in the mind's stirring toward the people in front of her. So she stops, lets one slow breath fall into her chest, and feels the quiet before speaking. Then she speaks the first line on that breath. Ordinary experience agrees on the point that a voice rests on breath, and a hurried breath makes a hurried, narrow voice. In the text's own teaching, the sound rising from the heart is Krishna's own power at work in her, and she may offer her words as coming from him. The verse does not promise that grief will ease, or that her voice will not shake. A shaking voice may still carry what she means. Nor does it replace care from a doctor when a voice or breath fails for reasons of illness.
