The Lord, made of meter and made of nectar, himself brings forth the Veda and draws it back in. It is a great road of a thousand paths. Om gives it its touched consonants, its vowels, its hissing sounds and its glides. It is spread out in many kinds of speech and in meters that each grow by four syllables. It is vast, and it has no farther shore.

Krishna is describing the Veda as a single thing with a source. Take the words one at a time. Omkara is the making of the syllable Om; the sounds all begin there. Sparsha means touch. These are the consonants, where tongue meets palate, teeth or lips. Ushma means warmth, the breathy hissing sounds. Antastha means standing between, the glides that sit between vowel and consonant. Chandas means meter, from a root meaning to cover, since a meter covers speech with a pattern. Ananta-para means without a far shore. Now the clauses. The Lord is made of meter and of nectar, so the Veda is not outside him. A thousand paths run through it, which is why it seems to point in many directions. Its letters are all grown from Om. It speaks in many tongues and forms. Its meters rise by four syllables each. It cannot be crossed to the end, and the Lord brings it out and takes it back himself. This is taught because Uddhava has been hearing that the Veda says different things in different places. Krishna answers that its size is the reason. One source gives rise to a whole expanse, and no one reads all of it. He asks Uddhava to hold it as vast, and not to take any one path for the whole.

A banyan tree grows from a seed smaller than a fingernail. It sends up a trunk, then branches, then hanging roots that become new trunks, until one tree shades a whole courtyard and no one can walk around it quickly. Om is the seed, and the many meters, sounds and languages are the spreading tree.

1. Once today, sit for two minutes and say the vowel sounds slowly: a, e, i, o, u. Notice where your mouth opens and where your breath goes. 2. Then say a consonant sound, such as m, t or s. Notice which part of your mouth touches, and whether the sound is held, clipped or hissed. 3. Hum a single note, then let it open into a word you know well. Notice how one breath carries it.

A new father walks the hallway at three in the morning with his daughter on his shoulder. He makes sounds to settle her: a long hum, a soft shh, a few clipped syllables, then a lullaby in his mother's language. She understands none of the words and slows down anyway. The verse names the kinds of sound he is using. The consonants where the mouth touches, the breathy hissing ones, the glides and the open vowels are the same groups a speech therapist or phonetics teacher uses today to sort the sounds of any language. Krishna's teaching is that all of it grows from Om, and that the Lord shapes and withdraws this whole expanse. The father needs no theory for this. He moves from hum to shh to song, and each is a different shape of one breath. The limit is plain. Naming the sounds does not make the baby sleep, and it does not by itself give anyone the meaning of the Veda. Krishna says the expanse has no far shore.
