The Heart of the Meters

Meaning · English
Gayatri, Ushnik, Anushtubh, Brihati, Pankti, Tristubh, Jagati, Aticchandas, Atyashti, Atijagati, Virat: these are the meters. What does the Veda enjoin? What does it declare? What does it restate, and then set up as alternatives? In the world no one but me knows the heart of this.
The verse opens with a list of meters. A meter (chandas, from chad, to cover) is the measured pattern of syllables in which Vedic words are "covered" and carried. Eleven are named, from the short Gayatri to the long Virat. Krishna lists them to show how large the Veda's outward form is. Then come three questions, each built on a verb. Vidhatte is "enjoins": what command does a line give? Acaste is "declares": what does it simply state? Anudya is "restating", saying again something already known. Vikalpa is the setting up of alternatives, this or that. A reader of the Veda keeps meeting these four moves: commands, statements, repetitions, options. The commentators take the questions as asking what any Vedic line is actually doing. Krishna then says that the heart of this, what the whole structure is for, is known to no one else in the world but him. He is not shaming scholars. He has just described the Veda as shoreless and made of many meters. A reader could master every meter and still miss its centre. He says what the Veda's real aim is, and who can tell it, before he tells it. The verse asks the listener to stop treating the meters, commands and options as the goal. It asks Uddhava to listen for the heart behind them.
A temple festival lane is hung with hundreds of coloured bulbs on many wires. A child counts the wires and the colours, while the electrician knows the one switch at the back that feeds them all. The meters and rules are the bulbs. Krishna says he is the switch.
1. Tonight, pick one prayer or verse you already know, and read it slowly once. 2. Ask three plain questions of it: what does it ask me to do, what does it simply tell me, and what does it repeat? 3. Write one line on what you think it is all for. 4. Keep the line. Read the verse again in a week and see whether your answer has changed.
A student sits the night before an exam with a thick guidebook. She has highlighted every line in four colours and cannot say what the chapter is about. Her tutor asks her to close the book and say in one sentence what the author wants the reader to understand. She finds she cannot, and sees that she has been collecting rules and listing details without asking what they serve. That is the move this verse makes. It sorts a text's lines into commands, statements, repetitions and options, then points past the sorting to a centre. She opens the book again, asking of each section what it is doing and why it is there. The pages begin to hang together. Ordinary experience bears out that a large body of detail is easier to hold once its purpose is clear. The verse does not promise she will pass the exam. It also does not hand over the answer itself: the text says that heart belongs to Krishna, and the next verse takes it up.
