All the Veda Points to Me

The Veda enjoins me, declares me, and sets up distinctions; when they are set aside, I remain. This is all the Vedas mean: speech rests on me, speaks of difference as only maya, then denies it and grows still.

Three words carry the verse. Vidhatte is 'lays down, enjoins': the Veda's commands and rituals. Abhidhatte is 'declares, names': its praises and descriptions. Vikalpa, from the root klrip, to arrange, is 'setting up alternatives': this deity for this wish, this rite for that result. Apoha is the reverse, 'setting aside'. Krishna says that in all three, the one being addressed is himself. The commands point to him, the praises name him, and when the alternatives are cleared away, he is what is left. Then he says what the whole Veda comes to. Speech needs difference to speak at all, so it rests on him and talks about many things. It calls that many-ness maya, a measured-out appearance. Then it denies it, and the speaking grows quiet, like a person who has finally been answered. The question behind this is the one in the previous verses: what does the Veda really enjoin, declare and doubt? Krishna answers that only he knows its heart. It asks the listener to read the Veda's many promises as a single pointing. The commentators generally take the setting aside as the Veda's own method, not a rejection of it.

A tailor chalks lines across a length of cloth, follows them with the scissors, then brushes the chalk away. The lines were never the garment. The chalk marks are the Veda's many rules and names; the finished cloth is the one thing they were all drawn to cut toward.

1. Choose one instruction you follow daily: a prayer, a routine, a rule of your household. Today, ask at what moment it is meant to leave you with something simple. 2. After doing it, sit for two minutes without adding anything. Notice what remains once the doing stops. 3. At night, write one sentence: what was this practice pointing me toward?

A father stands in a shallow pool with his daughter. He says: kick, reach, turn your head, breathe out under water. She tries to hold all of it at once and sinks. Then, one afternoon, she lets go of the list and floats. Nobody says the list was wrong; it got her there. Krishna's teaching works the same way, as the text tells it. The Veda's many commands, names and alternatives are speech doing its work, and every one is meant to lead to him. When difference has been spoken and set aside, the speaking quiets. Ordinary experience confirms the shape of this: instructions that scaffold a skill fall away once the skill is in hand. The limit is plain. The verse does not tell the father how to teach swimming, and it does not make the child safe near water; a lifeguard and a careful eye still matter. It speaks about what all the instructions are for, not about whether the day's steps can be skipped.
