How many tattvas have the sages counted, Lord of the universe, O master? You have told us here: nine, eleven, five and three. Some say twenty-six, others twenty-five. Some say seven, some nine, some six; others four, and others eleven. Some say seventeen, some sixteen, some thirteen. With what intention do the sages each sing their own number, apart from the rest? Long-lived one, you are able to tell us this.

Two words carry the question. A tattva is one of the basic principles a teaching sorts the world into: the elements, the senses, the mind and so on. The word means roughly 'that-ness', what a thing is at bottom. Vivakshā is the wish to say something, the intention a speaker carries into his words. The first is what is being counted. The second is what Uddhava suspects explains the counting. Uddhava is perplexed. Krishna has already mentioned counts of nine, eleven, five and three. Now Uddhava lists others heard from other teachers: twenty-six or twenty-five, seven, nine, six, four, eleven, seventeen, sixteen, thirteen. Each sage sounds certain. They cannot all be right if the question is simply 'how many'. So he asks two things. How many are there? And why does each sage sing a different number, each apart from the others? He then asks Krishna to explain, calling him Lord of the universe, the one who can settle it. He asks now because Krishna has been teaching him what is pure and impure, and what the elements are. A student who hears that the schools disagree about the very parts of the world will wonder which teacher to trust. The commentators read the question as a worry about contradiction, not as a challenge to the sages. It asks the listener to hold a number loosely, and to ask what the person giving it was trying to show.

A family is counted three ways: by households, by people, by generations. Each count is true, and each answers a different need, such as a ration card, a wedding list or a family tree. The sages' numbers are like this. Each count serves what that sage was trying to make clear.

1. Tonight, pick one ordinary thing, such as your home, your day or your family, and count its parts two different ways on paper. 2. Beside each count, write what it is useful for. 3. Next time two people give you different numbers or lists for the same matter, ask first what each one wants to show, before asking who is wrong.

A daughter sits in a hospital corridor. One doctor told her father's trouble has three parts. Another, at the next bed, spoke of five. She is frightened that someone has it wrong. Then she asks each what the list is for. The first was explaining what must be treated this week. The second was writing out everything the nurses must watch. The illness is the same. The counting follows the need, and she can ask which list to follow tonight and which can wait. She stops hunting for a mistake and starts using both lists for what each is good at. Ordinary experience confirms the pattern: a person describing a house to a buyer, to a tax clerk and to a builder gives three different lists. The limit is plain. This does not settle a medical question, and it does not ease her fear. If the doctors truly contradict each other on what to do, she asks them to talk to one another. In the text's own telling, Uddhava's question is only the start of an answer Krishna goes on to give.
