Krishna says: What the sages say is reasonable, and all these things are present everywhere, just as the brahmanas speak of them. For those who take up my Maya to speak, what is hard to do? It is not as you put it; what I say is so. This is the cause when people dispute: my powers are hard to cross. From their mixing together arose the alternatives, the ground the disputers stand on. When calm and self-control are reached, the dispute goes away, and after it, it is stilled.

Krishna is answering Uddhava's worry that the sages give so many different counts. Three words carry it. Maya is Krishna's own power of appearing as many. Shakti means power or capacity; he speaks of his powers in the plural. Vikalpa is an alternative, a way of dividing the same thing differently. Shama is calm of mind and dama is holding the senses in check. The plain sense, clause by clause: each sage's account is reasonable, because every element is present in everything, so each can be named as first or last. Anyone who speaks by taking up Krishna's Maya can build a persuasive account, and nothing is hard for them. Then Krishna tells Uddhava the matter is not as Uddhava framed it, as a clash of rivals, and what Krishna himself says stands. The cause of the quarrel is his powers, which are hard to cross. They mix, and from the mixing come the alternatives that disputers stand on. When calm and self-control are reached, the arguing falls away, and the urge to argue settles after it. This is taught because Uddhava asked which count is right. Krishna's reply is that the quarrel itself comes from the mixing of his powers. What it asks of a listener is to look at what stirs the quarrel in the mind. The commentators generally take this as showing the counts to be reconcilable rather than opposed.

A pot of lentils at full boil clatters, and the lid jumps and the froth climbs. Take it off the flame and it settles by itself, nobody having argued with it. The boiling is the dispute, and the flame is the mind's restlessness that feeds it.

1. Next time you catch yourself arguing a point with someone, pause for one slow breath before your next sentence. 2. Ask yourself whether the other person's view could be true from where they stand. Spend a minute on that before replying. 3. If the heat is still high, leave the point for an hour or until tomorrow. Notice what is left of it afterwards. 4. Note, once this week, an argument that simply died once you were calm.

A retired schoolteacher sits at a tea stall while two neighbours shout about whether the old village well should be repaired or a new one dug. Both have real facts: the old one is cheaper, the new one will last. She says nothing for a few minutes and lets her tea cool. The shouting runs out of breath. Then she asks each to say what the other's plan gets right. Both can answer, because the heat that kept them from hearing is gone. Krishna's teaching, as the text puts it, is that disputes grow from the mixing of his powers and settle when calm and self-control arrive. Ordinary experience agrees that anger narrows hearing and that a quiet hour or a night's sleep often softens a quarrel. The limit is plain. Calm does not decide whether the well should be mended or dug anew, and it does not make a wrong claim right. It only clears the way to see what each speaker was pointing at. Where the dispute concerns safety, health or money, the facts still have to be checked, and a doctor, an engineer or an accountant still has to be asked.
