A Door Left Open
Bhagavad Gita 2.32
Meaning · English
Unsought, the door to the celestial abodes has come wide open. Happy are the warriors, Arjun, son of Pritha, who obtain a war such as this.
Three words carry it. Yadrichchha means what comes of itself, unplanned and unasked. Svarga-dvara is the door (dvara) to svarga, the celestial worlds. Sukhin means happy, at ease, one for whom things go well. Arjuna has been saying that this war can bring him only ruin. Krishna answers that for a warrior a righteous fight like this one is not a disaster. It came without his seeking it, and for a kshatriya, a warrior, it stands open like a door. The warriors who get such a chance are the fortunate ones. Krishna calls Arjuna Partha, son of Pritha, which reminds him whose son he is and what that house has always stood for. The reason is the problem Arjuna has just voiced: he sees only the loss ahead. Krishna asks him to see what the moment offers. Shankara reads the promise of heaven as a reward for a duty done well, and keeps the highest aim for knowledge. Ramanuja reads the war as a duty that becomes worship when offered to the Lord. Madhva reads it as a duty done in the knowledge of God's supremacy.
A train stands at the platform with its doors open and the whistle about to go. A man who dreads the trip hangs back and sees only the crowd. A man who has long wanted to reach that town steps in gladly. The war is the train that arrived unplanned, and Krishna asks Arjuna which of the two men he wants to be.
1. Choose one task today that landed on you unasked, such as a chore, a request or a hard visit. 2. Before starting, spend one minute asking what it might open: a repaired friendship, a skill, a lighter week. 3. Then work at it for twenty minutes without bargaining or complaining aloud. 4. This evening, write one line on what the task asked of you and what it gave.
Meena is twenty-six when her father has a stroke and the family's small hardware shop is suddenly hers to open. It is seven in the morning. The shutter is still down, the keys are heavy in her hand, and she thinks only of what she is losing: her plans, her sleep, her ease. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she names the work as unsought, and nobody chose it for her out of malice. Second, she asks what this door opens: a trade she has watched for years, a chance to be useful to the man who raised her. Third, she lifts the shutter and does the first hour's work, without waiting to feel ready. Ordinary experience bears out that a hard task taken up with some sense of its worth is easier to carry than one resented. The verse does not promise that she will feel glad, that the shop will thrive or that her father will recover. It does not take away her fear or her grief. It offers a different way of looking at what has arrived.
