Meaning · English

The great principle, richest in qualities, dissolves into its own three qualities. These dissolve into the unmanifest, and the unmanifest dissolves into time, the undying. Time dissolves into the living being made of illusion, and the living being dissolves into the Self, which is Me, the unborn. The Self is alone, rests in itself, and is known by the ending of every imagined alternative.

Krishna is finishing a long list of things melting into their causes. This verse takes the last steps. Three words carry it. Guna means a strand or quality, and here it names sattva, rajas and tamas, the three strands the world is woven from. Avyakta means the unmanifest, from a-vyakta, not yet shown: the root condition before anything has form. Vikalpa means an alternative, a this-or-that, from kalpa, to fashion or imagine. It is the mind's habit of cutting one thing into many. Now the clauses. The mahat, the first great principle, which holds all the qualities most fully, folds into the three gunas it came from. The gunas fold into the unmanifest. The unmanifest folds into time. Time folds into the jiva, the living being, whom Krishna calls made of maya. The jiva folds into the Self, which Krishna names as Himself, unborn. Last comes the description of that Self: single, resting in itself, marked by the end of vikalpa. Why teach it here? Uddhava is about to lose his teacher, and Krishna wants him to see what stays when everything else has a cause and an end. The reason Krishna gives, in the verses just after, is that one who sees this way no longer holds the doubt of many alternatives. The verse asks only that the listener follow the folding all the way to its end.

Picture a long row of nested wooden dolls. Each one opens to show a smaller one inside, until the last is opened and there is only a plain solid core. The dolls stand for the stages of the world, each held in the next, and the core stands for the Self left once every stage is opened.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes with the lights low and no phone. 2. Pick one worry from today. Notice how many versions of it your mind has built: if this, then that. 3. Count the versions without choosing among them. Notice that one thing is watching all of them. 4. Let the count end when you lose interest. Notice what is left in the quiet that follows.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor waiting for a scan report. Her mind runs the scenarios one after another: good news, bad news, what she will tell her sister, how the house will manage. Her shoulders tighten, her breathing goes shallow, and each imagined ending feels almost real. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in small steps. First she can see that these are alternatives, things her mind has fashioned, not facts in the room. Next she can see that all of them are being watched, and that the watcher is one and does not change with each scenario. Then the scenarios loosen a little, as they do when they are named. What stays is the corridor, her breath, the chair under her. Ordinary experience agrees that dwelling on imagined outcomes can tighten the body and that naming them can ease it. The verse does not promise the report will be good, and it does not take away fear or grief. It is no substitute for the doctor she is waiting to see.
