For one who looks at things this way, how can the confusion born of imagined divisions stay in the heart of the mind? Can darkness remain in the sky when the sun has risen? This is the method of Samkhya as I have taught it. It cuts the knot of doubt. I have shown it in both orders, against the grain and with the grain, as one who sees the higher and the lower.
Four words carry it. Vikalpa is seeing things as split into separate, different things; it comes from vi, apart, and klp, to fashion. Bhrama is confusion, literally a whirling around. Granthi is a knot, and samshaya is doubt, so the knot of doubt is the tangle the mind ties in itself. Pratiloma and anuloma are against the grain and with the grain: the order in which things fold back, and the order in which they unfold. Krishna has just walked Uddhava through the world folding back into its source. Now he asks a question that answers itself. For a person who sees this way, where could the confusion of imagined divisions stay? It cannot, he says, any more than darkness can stay in the sky after sunrise. Darkness is not driven out by effort. It is simply what is there when light is absent. He then names what he has given: the Samkhya method, whose work is to cut the knot of doubt. He taught it in both directions, and he calls himself the one who sees the higher and the lower, so the tracing is not guesswork. The commentators take the two directions as creation and dissolution. He says this to Uddhava, who is about to be left behind, so that the teaching leaves him with sight and not only comfort. What it asks is steady looking in this way.
A fishing line has knotted itself into a ball. Pulling hard only tightens it. Following the line from one end, then from the other, loosens it. The knot is the doubt, and tracing the line in both directions is the looking Krishna describes.
1. This evening, pick one worry that keeps circling. Give it ten minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write what happened first, then next, back to where it began. 3. Then write what would follow, step by step, if it ran its course. 4. Mark which lines are known and which are only imagined. Notice how the worry feels once it is laid out in order.
A man lies awake at two in the morning, replaying a sharp word he said to his brother at dinner. Was it contempt? Did the brother take it that way? Every version he imagines feels equally true, and none settles anything. The verse would change this by asking him to look in order. First, what was actually said, and what came before it. Then, what honestly follows from it: an apology, a silence, a phone call in the morning. Traced both ways, the quarrel stops being a fog and becomes a short chain of events, some known and some only guessed. The imagined divisions, such as the brother as enemy and himself as villain, are the parts that lose their hold when the line is followed through. Ordinary experience confirms that a worry written out plainly usually weighs less than one that only circles. The limit is plain. Looking this way does not undo the word that was said, and it does not remove grief or guilt that are real. Sleeplessness that goes on for weeks is a matter for a doctor, not for a method of reflection.
