Now hear from me, best of men, how a person comes to be shaped by each guna when it stands unmixed. Calm of mind, mastery of the senses, forbearance, clear seeing, austerity, truthfulness, compassion, remembrance, contentment, letting go, freedom from craving, faith, modesty, and joy in oneself: these mark sattva.

Krishna opens a new chapter with a promise: he will show how a person turns out when only one guna is at work. The first guna he describes is sattva, the clear, steady one. The opening line is an invitation to Uddhava to listen closely. The second verse is the list. Three words carry most of it. Sama is calm of mind, the stillness of a pot of water no one is shaking. Dama is restraint of the senses, from a root meaning to tame. Svanirvriti is joy in oneself: ease that needs no outside prop. The other items run along beside them. Titiksha is forbearance, bearing heat, cold and insult without lashing out. Iksha is seeing clearly. Tapas is austerity, a chosen discipline. Satya is truthfulness. Daya is compassion. Smriti is remembering what matters. Tushti is contentment. Tyaga is letting go. Asprha is being free of craving. Shraddha is faith. Hri is modesty, the inner flinch from wrongdoing. Krishna teaches this because Uddhava is being asked to see the world as shaped by three strands. A person who cannot tell them apart cannot tell what is pulling him. The list is a portrait of what sattva looks like in a life. It asks the listener to learn the portrait, so he can recognise these qualities when they appear and notice when they are missing.

A jar of muddy pond water, left on a shelf, slowly clears. The silt sinks and the light passes through to the bottom. Sattva is that clearing: the same water, no longer stirred, so the mind sees through itself and what lies beneath.

1. Tonight, pick one item from the list that you already have a little of: contentment, truthfulness or forbearance. 2. Tomorrow, watch for one moment when it shows up, such as letting a small insult pass or finishing a meal and not reaching for more. 3. Before bed, write one line saying when it happened and how long it lasted. 4. Do this for one week, with the same quality each day, and notice whether it comes more easily.

A taxi driver, near the end of a long evening shift, finds a passenger has paid him too much. He is tired, the rent is due, and no one saw. The list speaks to that moment. Satya, truthfulness, tells him to hand it back. Tushti, contentment, lets him accept what the day has earned without grabbing at more. Dama, restraint, holds the hand that wants to pocket it, and sama, calm, keeps the choice from turning into a storm. Ordinary experience bears out that a settled mind chooses more cleanly than a hungry one, and that tiredness weakens restraint. The teaching asks him to know these qualities well enough to recognise them in himself. It does not promise that the rent will be paid, that tiredness will lift, or that choosing well will feel pleasant. Money worries and exhaustion remain real, and where sleeplessness or low mood runs deep, a doctor is the right person to see.
