Craving, restless effort, pride, thirst, stiffness, asking for blessings, seeing difference, pleasure, boastful zeal, love of fame, mockery, daring, striving with force. Anger, greed, untruth, harm, begging, show, weariness, quarrel, grief, bewilderment, dejection, distress, sleep, expectation, fear, and idleness.
Krishna is listing, almost like a doctor's chart, what rajas and tamas look like when they are working in a person. The first run belongs to rajas, the restless quality: desire, busy effort, pride, craving, a stiff wish to be seen, love of fame, mockery, daring and the push to win. The second run belongs to tamas, the dark and heavy quality: anger, greed, lying, harming, begging, hypocrisy, exhaustion, quarrelling, grief, confusion, despair, too much sleep, fear and doing nothing. Four words carry the list. Kama is desire, the pull toward a thing. Trishna is thirst, craving that returns however much is drunk. Dambha is show, acting a virtue one does not have. Moha is bewilderment, the mind clouded so that it cannot see what is in front of it. The reason Krishna gives this list is practical. He has just named the quiet marks of sattva and wants Uddhava to be able to tell, in himself, which quality is moving at a given hour. A mood that cannot be named cannot be loosened. The verse asks the listener only to recognise these as qualities passing through, not as who one is.
A car dashboard lights up one warning lamp at a time, each with its own small symbol. The driver does not panic or blame himself; he reads the symbol and knows what is running hot or low. The verse's long list works the same way: each named mood is a lamp that tells you which quality is driving.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for three minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write down the two strongest moods of your day in plain words, such as hurry, irritation, boasting, dread or heaviness. 3. Beside each, mark R if it was restless and pushing, or T if it was dull, fearful or sunk. 4. Do not fix anything. Just notice which letter came up more often, and repeat for three evenings.
A woman lies awake after a sharp quarrel with her sister. She replays her best retorts, feels her pulse, rehearses what she will say tomorrow, and by two in the morning is both angry and afraid. She oversleeps and snaps at her child. Krishna's list gives her a way to see this. The quarrel-night was restlessness: pride, the wish to win, fame in her sister's eyes. The late morning was heaviness: fatigue, fear, a flat refusal to begin. Naming each as a passing quality, and not as a verdict on her character, loosens its grip a little. Ordinary experience agrees that a mood named aloud or on paper often feels smaller than one left unspoken. The verse does not promise that the quarrel will heal, that the sleep will return, or that grief will lift. If low mood, dread or sleeplessness linger for weeks, that is a matter for a doctor, not for a list of qualities.
