The workings of sattva, rajas and tamas have now been told, mostly one by one. Now hear how they mix, Uddhava. The mixing is the notion "I" and "mine." Ordinary dealing with the world is that mixing, carried on through the mind, the objects of sense, the senses and the life-breaths.
Three words carry the verse. Sannipata means a falling together, a mixing, from sam-ni-pat, to fall together. Mati is a settled notion, a conviction the mind rests on. Vyavahara is dealing, the ordinary give and take of daily life. Krishna says he has already laid out the workings of sattva, rajas and tamas, mostly one at a time. Now he turns to how they are found in a real person, which is mixed. No one is only calm, only restless or only dull. Over a single day, all three move through one life. He then says what holds the mixture together: the notion "I" and "mine." Where a person says "my work, my body, my gain, my hurt," the gunas stop being separate and become one person's life. He adds that ordinary dealing is this mixing. It happens through the mind, the objects of sense, the senses and the breaths. That is the whole instrument of daily life. The teaching answers a risk in the lists that came before. Uddhava has heard separate qualities, and a reader might sort people into three boxes. Krishna corrects that. The commentators read the mixture as the gunas' ordinary working together in a life. The weight falls on the claiming of "I" and "mine," because that is where the mixing happens. Krishna asks Uddhava to hear this and to look for that claiming.
Three colours of paint stirred in one tin turn to a single brown, and no one can lift the red back out. A day's acts are like that brown. Calm, restlessness and dullness are all in them, and the habit of saying "mine" is the stirring stick.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as cooking a meal or answering a message, and do it as usual. 2. Afterward, take two minutes to recall it. Find one moment of calm care, one of hurry or wanting, and one of dullness or avoidance. 3. Notice where you said "I" or "my" inside it, as in "my way" or "my time." 4. Write those words on a scrap of paper. Do not judge them. Just see how they sat among the other parts.
A man driving home is cut off by a car that pulls into his lane. His chest tightens before he has thought anything. His hands grip the wheel. Then a sentence arrives: "He did that to me." Within seconds he is angry, and he follows the car for a while. The verse takes that moment apart. Breath, heartbeat and eyes are the body doing its work. The sight of the car and the sound of the horn are objects of sense. The mind joins them into a story. Then "I" and "mine" attach to it: my lane, my time, my dignity. Krishna's teaching is that the mixing of calm, restlessness and dullness is held together at that point of claiming. Seeing that sequence, step by step, gives the man a place to stand before he follows the car. The verse does not promise that the tightness in the chest will not come, or that the insult will stop stinging. Ordinary experience does confirm that a body already hurried or tired reaches for "mine" faster. The old terms sattva, rajas and tamas have no exact modern match, and the verse offers no medical advice for anger that has become a danger to oneself or others.
