Meaning · English

When a person is firmly set in duty, in wealth and in desire, the strands of nature meet closely in him, and bring faith, pleasure and riches. When a man stands firm in the life of outward activity, in the household, and keeps to his own duty, that too is a gathering of the strands.

Three words carry the verse. Dharma is duty, from a root meaning to hold up: what keeps a life and a family standing. Artha is wealth, the means to live. Kama is desire, the wish for pleasure and comfort. Pravritti means turning outward toward the world, the opposite of withdrawing from it. Krishna tells Uddhava that a person absorbed in these three pursuits is living where the gunas meet closely. Out of that meeting come faith, enjoyment and money. Faith belongs to duty, pleasure to desire, riches to wealth. Then he names the setting: a man rooted in household life, doing the work proper to his own station, is another case of the gunas coming together. Nothing here is a fault. Krishna is describing, not scolding. Uddhava has just heard each guna listed separately, and a reader may ask where they actually appear. The answer is the ordinary day: earning, fulfilling obligations, wanting things, caring for a family. No one of the three strands runs a household alone. The commentators read the passage as showing the gunas at work in the very life most people lead. It asks the listener to see a busy home as a mixture of pulls, and to stop expecting any one pure motive.

A pot of dal on the stove holds lentils, salt, turmeric and chilli. Nobody tastes any one of them alone; the pot tastes of all together. A household day is the same: duty, money and wanting are cooked into one meal, and each strand adds its own flavour.

1. Tonight, pick one ordinary household task, such as paying a bill, cooking or settling a family matter. 2. While doing it, ask quietly: is this duty, wealth or wanting? Often it is all three. 3. Notice which pull is strongest, without changing anything. Two minutes is enough. 4. Tomorrow, repeat with a different task and see whether the strongest pull shifts.

A man in his thirties sits with the month's bills on Sunday evening. His daughter wants a game, his wife mentions a cousin's wedding gift, and he wants an hour of cricket. Duty, money and desire are all in the room at once, and they tug in different directions. The verse would first let him name what is happening: the bills are duty and wealth, the game is wanting, and the wedding gift is duty again. Seeing the pulls separately makes the irritation smaller, because he is no longer confused about why the evening feels crowded. Then he can order them: bills first, game with his daughter, cricket after. Ordinary experience agrees that a problem named plainly is easier to sort than one felt as a general strain. The teaching does not promise that the money will be enough, that family quarrels will vanish, or that wanting will go quiet. If worry about money has turned into sleeplessness or low mood that will not lift, a doctor or counsellor is the right person to see.
