A person full of sattva can be known by signs like calm and self-command. One ruled by rajas shows desire and its kin. One bound by tamas shows anger and its kin. When someone worships me with loving devotion, through their own duties, expecting nothing in return, know that person, man or woman, to be of sattva's nature. When someone worships me through their own duties but asks for blessings and gains, know that person to be of rajas' nature. When someone asks for harm to another, know that person to be of tamas.
Krishna has described the three gunas, the three strands that make up a mind. Now he gives Uddhava a way to recognise them in a living person, by outward signs. Sattva shows as calm and self-command. Rajas shows as craving, and tamas as anger and its relatives. Then he turns to worship, because even the same act of worship can come from different places. Three words carry it. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Nirapeksha means looking for nothing back, with apeksha being expectation. Svakarma means one's own duties, the work that is actually one's own to do. Worship through one's own duties with bhakti and no expectation marks sattva. Krishna adds that this holds for a man or a woman alike. Worship through the same duties, but asking for blessings and gains, marks rajas. Worship that asks for harm to another marks tamas. So the question is not how much a person worships or how well. It is what they are asking for. The commentators read this as a way of knowing, by signs, what rules a mind, so that Uddhava can see where a person stands. The teaching also asks something of the listener. Uddhava can hold this up as a mirror to his own prayers, and ask what he really wants when he comes to Krishna.
Three visitors come to the same neighbour's door. One comes only to sit with her and share tea. One comes to ask for a favour. One comes to ask for help against a rival. The same door and the same welcome, yet the visits show three different hearts. Worship is the door, and what is asked is the heart.
1. Tonight, before you pray, sit quietly for one minute and ask yourself what you are about to ask for. 2. Say the request plainly in your mind, without judging it. Notice whether it is love, a wish for gain, or a wish against someone. 3. Then do one of your own duties today, such as washing a dish or answering a message, as an offering with nothing wanted back. 4. Tomorrow, notice whether that act felt lighter.
A woman lights a lamp the night before her son's exam result. She notices her prayer is a bargain: pass him, and I will do this and that. A moment later she notices a second wish behind it, that his rival should fail. Krishna's teaching asks for no more than that noticing. She sees the asking for what it is, and she is not told to be ashamed of it. She may find the first wish is ordinary love mixed with fear, and the second is fear dressed as ill will. She can leave the bargain, set down the wish against the rival, and offer the lamp with a plain wish for her son's good. She can then do the next small duty, such as cooking his supper. Ordinary experience confirms that people speak to God very differently when afraid, when greedy and when thankful. The limit is plain. Noticing the asking does not change the result, and it does not remove the fear of waiting. It is also not a verdict on her. The text gives these as signs of a mind's leaning at a given time, and not as a fixed label on a person.
