Meaning · English

Sattva, rajas and tamas are the gunas of the mind, not of the self, and not of me. Born of the mind, they bind living beings who cling to them. When sattva, bright, clear and gentle, overcomes the other two, a person is joined to happiness, to dharma, to knowledge, and to what goes with them.

Krishna begins by placing the gunas. Sattva, rajas and tamas are not in the jiva, the living self, and not in him. They arise in the citta, the mind. Guna means a strand, as in a rope. Krishna's point is that the strands twist together in the mind and tie a person only when the person clings to them. That clinging is what the word sajjamana, being attached, names. Then he turns to sattva. Sattva means clarity, from sat, being. He describes it with three words: bhasvara, shining; visada, clear, like water with the mud settled; and siva, gentle, kind. When sattva overcomes rajas and tamas, a person is joined to sukha, happiness, and to dharma and knowledge, and to the good things that travel with them. Sridhara Svami reads the closing phrase as including such qualities as dispassion. Why teach it here? The earlier verses showed how to read a person's character. Uddhava needs to know where the gunas sit, because if they sit in the mind, they can be watched, and the self does not have to be changed. Krishna asks the listener to see clarity as a state of mind that arrives when the other two give way. It is not a possession.

A glass of muddy river water left on a windowsill. Given an hour, the silt sinks and the water shines. The water was never changed; the stirring stopped. The mind is the glass, rajas and tamas the stirred silt, sattva the clear water.

1. Tonight, pour a glass of water and stir in a spoonful of garden soil or flour. Watch it for five minutes. 2. Notice how clarity comes by waiting, not by effort. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel agitated or dull, say to yourself in plain words, 'this is the mind's state, not me.' 4. Sit quietly for five minutes and see whether anything settles.

A schoolteacher sits in the staff room after a loud, tangled afternoon with a parent who shouted at her. Her chest is tight and she is rehearsing replies. Krishna's teaching would first change the naming. This is the mind's weather, not her. Then she can let the rehearsal tire out, drink water, and wait before writing the email. Ordinary experience confirms that decisions made while agitated or exhausted tend to be worse than those made when rested and calm. After some quiet, she may see the parent's fear as well as the anger, and the reply she writes may be shorter and kinder. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the parent will change, that the conflict will end, or that the mind will always settle. Persistent low mood, panic or exhaustion that does not lift deserves a doctor's attention, not only patience. The old idea of gunas has no exact match in modern vocabulary, though clarity, restlessness and heaviness are familiar states to anyone who has lived through a day.
