Meaning · English
When rajas overcomes tamas and sattva, bringing attachment, division and restlessness, a person is joined with pain, with busy action, with fame and with wealth. When tamas overcomes rajas and sattva, bringing delusion, dissolving of the mind and dullness, a person is joined with sorrow and bewilderment, with sleep, with violence, and with empty expectation.
Three words carry this. Guna means a strand, like one thread of a rope. The three strands are sattva (clarity), rajas (stir and passion, from the sense of colouring or agitating) and tamas (darkness, inertia). Sanga, attachment, is how rajas holds: it clings to things and splits the mind between this and that. Krishna gives two cases. In the first, rajas has beaten the other two. The mind is clinging, divided and restless, and Krishna says the person is joined with pain, with busy action, with fame and with wealth. Fame and wealth stand on the list beside pain, as fruits of the same restlessness. In the second case, tamas has beaten the other two. The mind is deluded, dissolved and dull. Sorrow and bewilderment follow, then sleep, then violence, then a hollow kind of expectation. He says this here because he has just told Uddhava that the gunas belong to the mind of the living being, not to himself, and that they bind whoever clings to made things. Having shown what sattva brings, he now shows what the other two bring, so a mood can be recognised by its fruits. The word "when" matters: a guna rules for a time, and no one is any of them for good. What Krishna asks of Uddhava is plain attention, to see which strand is pulling, and to read pain, hurry, fog or anger as signs of it.
Take a glass of river water with silt at the bottom. Stir it with a spoon and the silt whirls, so nothing can be seen through it. Let it fill with heavy sludge and it turns thick and opaque. The whirl is rajas, the sludge is tamas, and the clear water is what both hide.
1. Twice today, once at midday and once before bed, stop for one minute and ask yourself: am I wired, foggy, or clear? 2. Name the answer in one word and jot it on a scrap of paper. 3. When you feel a sharp urge to snap, to buy, or to sleep through a task, name which strand is pulling before you act. 4. After a week, read the scraps and notice which hours bring which state.
A mother is up at four in the morning with a newborn, on her third broken night. Her husband offers to take the baby and she snaps at him. A minute later she lies still, flat and numb, wanting nothing. The verse gives her two names for two states. The wired, irritable, grasping one is rajas. The dull, heavy, blank one is tamas. Seeing the difference is the first step. She can tell herself the snap came from the stir and not from who she is, hand the baby over, and let the body rest instead of arguing with it. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint. The verse does not promise that she will sleep, or that the grief or strain of those nights will lift. If the flatness stays for weeks, or darkens, she needs a doctor, not a teaching about strands.
