Learning That Cannot Save

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 43.3

Meaning · English

The Vedas do not carry a deceitful person out of sin, one who lives by deceit. Knowing the texts does not lift such a person clear of the wrong done.

Sanatsujata is answering Dhritarashtra's fear of death, and here he says what does not protect a person from it. Two words matter. Maya here is the sense of deceit or false show: living by a pretence, saying one thing and being another. Papa is sin, the wrong that stays with a person after the act. The verse says the Vedas do not rescue (the sense of the verb is to pull across, as over a river) a person who lives by deceit. Taken clause by clause: the Vedas are real and honoured, yet they do not lift the deceitful person out of wrong, and a life built on pretence stays wrong however much text sits in the memory. Why does the sage say it? The king is awake all night, afraid of ending, and hopes that learning might shield him. Sanatsujata's reason is that knowledge held only as words, while the life stays false, has not been lived. In this reading, death is a forgetting, and the deceitful person has already forgotten what the words were for. Nilakantha's commentary, as far as I can say, is not quoted here, so no particular reading of his is given.

A man keeps a medicine cabinet full of labelled bottles and can recite every label, but never takes a dose. When he falls ill, the shelf does nothing for him. The bottles are the Vedas, the unswallowed dose is the honest life, and the illness is the wrong that remains.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one thing you said today that was not quite true, even a small one. 2. Say to yourself, plainly and in a few words, what was true instead. Take about two minutes. 3. Tomorrow, notice one moment when you could put on a show. Say the plain thing instead, once.
