Twelve Marks of a Brahmana
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 43.11
Meaning · English
Dharma, truth, self-control, austerity, freedom from envy, modesty, patience, goodwill toward others, sacrifice, giving, steadiness, and learning from the scriptures: these twelve are the practices of a Brahmana.
Sanatsujata gives a list here, and each item is a way of living. Take three. Dharma is the root dhr, to hold up: the conduct that keeps a life and a community standing. Dama is self-control, from the sense of taming, as one tames a horse. Titiksha is patience under heat and cold, praise and insult, from a root meaning to bear. Then the rest, none left out. Truth means not harming and speaking what is so. Austerity is chosen hardship. Freedom from envy means taking real pleasure in another's good fortune. Modesty is shame at wrong. Goodwill is love toward others. Sacrifice is offering. Giving is charity. Steadiness is holding on when it is hard. Learning is study of the scriptures. Nilakantha reads the list as marking the qualities of a true Brahmana, a person of knowledge, not a claim about birth. Dhritarashtra lay awake afraid of death and loss. Just before this, Sanatsujata named the faults that destroy people. Now he names what stands against them. His reason: these twelve are practices, and none requires wealth or rank. They are done in conduct, and anyone can begin.
Think of a well-built house with twelve posts holding up the roof. No single post looks grand, but each carries its share of weight. Take one away and the roof sags on that side. The twelve practices work like those posts: quiet, unseen, and together they hold a life up.
1. Tonight, pick one of the twelve, such as patience or speaking only what is so, and write its name on a scrap of paper. 2. Tomorrow, keep the paper in your pocket and glance at it three times. Each time, notice whether you are practicing it at that moment. 3. Before the day ends, think of one person doing well and see if you can be glad for them, without adding a "but". 4. Give something small that costs no money, such as ten minutes of unhurried attention to someone.
