Not Grieving Failed Work
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 43.21
Meaning · English
The fourth kind of renunciation is this: though a person has every virtue and every kind of wealth, when their undertakings come to nothing, they do not grieve and do not let the self be tormented by sorrow.
Sanatsujata is counting the kinds of tyaga, renunciation. The word means a letting go, from a root meaning to leave behind. In this fourth kind, what is let go is not a possession but a reaction. The second key word is shoka, grief, from a root meaning to burn. Sanatsujata treats grief as a fire that can start inside the self. The third idea is the failure of one's actions: work done well that does not bear fruit. The plain sense runs clause by clause. A person may have every virtue and every kind of wealth. Even so, their undertakings can fail. The fourth renunciation is that this person does not grieve and does not let the self be afflicted. The text does not call the virtues or the wealth bad, and it does not tell anyone to stop acting. What is released is the burning that follows a failure. Sanatsujata names the fullest case, someone who has everything. If even that person can be undone by a failed plan, then having little makes no one more or less exposed to the fire. He says this to Dhritarashtra, a king awake at night and afraid of what his plans may come to. The teaching is that peace does not wait on outcomes.
A farmer tends his field well, with good seed and good water, and a hailstorm flattens it overnight. He can stand in the ruined rows and burn with it, or he can walk out and look at the soil. The hail is the failed undertaking. The burning is grief, which is a second harm on top of the first.
1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one effort from this week that did not turn out as you hoped. Take two minutes. 2. Notice whether you are still feeling the loss itself or only replaying it. They are different. 3. If you are replaying it, say plainly to yourself, "That attempt failed." Stop there, without adding a verdict on yourself. 4. Tomorrow, when something small goes wrong, watch for the moment grief begins to burn, and just name it.
