Meaning · English

Scolded by Yashoda for eating mud, the frightened boy opens his mouth: all fourteen worlds inside. Bow to Govinda, pillar of the three worlds, unseen light, supreme bliss.

Yashoda catches her little son with mud in his mouth and raises her hand. He is scared, the way any toddler is. She makes him open wide, and inside she sees all fourteen worlds, the whole layered universe, down to the mountain range said to ring its edge. The same small boy is called the central pillar holding up earth, sky and heaven. He lights every world, yet no eye sees him. Lord of the worlds, highest lord, and pure joy.

In a dark kitchen you flip the switch and see the table, the cups, your own hands. You never see the light itself, only what it falls on. Govinda sits in that place: every world shows up because of him, and he stays out of view, even while a scared boy stands there with mud on his chin.
