Eats Butter, Needs Nothing

Meaning · English

He ends heaven's foes, earth's burden, rebirth's sickness; eats butter, needs no food, yet swallows the worlds. A clear mind shows him, yet he is beyond showing. Bow to Govinda, the supreme bliss.

He removes three things: the warriors who fought against heaven, the weight pressing on the earth, and the long illness of being born again and again. He is freedom itself, the state of standing alone. The child eats butter from the pot, yet he needs no food, and he is the one who takes every world as his food. When a mind is washed clean, he appears in it as a clear, particular awareness. Still, he is not that appearance. He is auspicious. He is peace with nothing added. He is supreme bliss.

A bowl of water set out at night, once the dust settles, holds a bright moon. Stir it and the moon breaks; let it clear and the moon returns. Yet the moon was never in the bowl. A clean mind is like that water: Govinda shows in it, but he is not the shining it holds.
