Meaning · English
Bow to Govinda, highest joy: the Lord who took the cowherd's form in play, guardian of his clan, who played with the gopis and lifted Govardhana in sport, cherishing the herders; the cows called him Govinda, he has many names, yet lies beyond the gopis' perception, beyond the senses.
One short syllable, go, runs through the whole line. It can mean cow, and it can also mean the senses, or speech. Gopala is the cowherd who keeps the cows. He is also the Lord who took that form as play, and the guardian of his clan. He played with the gopis and held up Govardhana hill almost as a game, and the herders were cared for by it. The cows themselves spoke his name, Govinda, clearly; read the other way, words, the Vedas, speak it. He carries many names. Yet he stays far beyond the gopis' perception, and so beyond the reach of all the senses.
A village well. Every family drops a bucket into it each morning. Every household has its own name for it, and the children shout into it to hear the echo. Yet no one has seen the bottom. Govinda is like that: he answers to the cows' call and to many names, close enough to draw from, too deep for the eye.
