Meaning · English
Bow to Govinda, supreme joy: distinct among the gopis, seeming divided yet shining as one, his charm always grey with hoof-dust; held by faith, beyond thought yet sought in thought, a wishing-gem.
The verse sets small farm details beside large claims. He stands apart in the gathering of cowherd women. He lives among separate things, yet he looks undivided. His good looks are the dust the cows kick up, settling grey on him every day. His joy is caught through trust and devotion, not through argument. No thought can hold him, yet his reality is what the mind turns toward. His worth is like the wishing-gem of old stories, the stone said to give whatever is asked.
Set a row of brass water pots in a courtyard at night. Each one holds its own full moon, sharp and whole, and a child could walk from pot to pot counting moons. Yet only one moon hangs overhead. That is Govinda among the many gopis: wholly present to each one, never split between them.
