Clothes Up a Tree

Govindashtakam 6

Meaning · English

Up a tree with the bathers' clothes, he called them out to fetch them. Free of grief and delusion, awareness within mind, sheer being his body: bow to Govinda, highest joy.

The first half is a prank. Girls are bathing, flustered, and the boy runs off with their clothes and sits up a tree, calling them to come out of the water just as they are to get them back. The second half describes that same boy. He has shaken off both grief and confusion. He is awake, the very knowing that sits inside every mind. His body is made of nothing but being itself. The hymn sets the two side by side and does not apologise for either.

The same current in the wall runs a child's blinking, beeping toy and the lamp someone reads by. It is not weaker in the toy or more serious in the lamp. Pure being, which the hymn calls Govinda's only body, is just as whole in a boy laughing in a tree as in the knowing inside every mind.
