Meaning · English
Bow to Govinda, joy itself: beloved cause of causes, first yet beginningless, dancing on Kaliya's head in the Yamuna; time itself, outside time's ticking, moving past, present and future.
Krishna is called time itself, yet the small divisions of time, the seconds and hours, never touch him. He is the cause behind every cause. He comes first, though nothing came before him to start him off. He has taken in everything that exists. He clears away the faults of this hard age. He keeps past, present and future moving along. And right among these large claims he is a boy dancing, again and again, on the head of the serpent Kaliya in the Yamuna river.
A drummer at a village wedding sets the beat that everyone else dances to. The rhythm starts with him, and he is not stuck inside any single bar of it. Yet he can still leap up and dance on top of his own beat. Krishna sets the pace of past, present and future, and still dances.
