Meaning · English

In Vrindavan, land the gods worship, his soft jasmine-white smile is nectar to his friends. Great sages bow inwardly at his feet. Bow to Govinda, sea of virtues, highest joy.

The setting is Vrindavan, the forest country where Krishna grew up. It is so honoured that whole crowds of gods come to worship the place. His smile there is small and gentle, white as jasmine, and it tastes like nectar to the people near him. He is the happiness of his friends. The greatest sages, the ones everyone else bows to, bow inwardly to his two feet, where joy rests. He is a sea of good qualities. Then the refrain closes it: bow to Govinda, who is the highest joy.

A retired judge, the one the whole town stands up for, kneels on a kitchen floor to tie a toddler's shoe, smiling the whole time. Nobody finds it strange. The verse describes the same order: sages everyone bows to are bowing themselves, and gods are worshipping a cowherd village, all because of one child's small white smile.
