Self Needs Another Knower

Bhagavata Purana 11.22.10

Meaning · English

For a person bound by ignorance with no beginning, knowledge of the self does not arise from himself. So there must be another, one who knows the truth, who gives that knowledge. Between the person and the Lord there is not the slightest difference in this matter, and to imagine anything other than this is pointless. Knowledge, too, is a quality of prakriti.

Three words carry this teaching. Avidya is ignorance, from vid, to know, with a negating a: not-knowing. Krishna calls it anadi, without beginning, so no one can point to a day when it started. Purusha is the person, the one who knows and is aware. Prakriti is nature, the making-stuff of the world, which includes body, mind and the quality called sattva, clear knowing. Now the clauses. Krishna tells Uddhava that a person held by this old ignorance cannot light up the self by his own effort alone. He needs another who already knows the truth and can hand the knowledge over. That giver of knowledge is the teacher, and behind the teacher, the Lord. Then Krishna says that between the purusha and Ishvara there is not even a hair's difference in this matter, and that imagining some further thing beyond is useless. The commentators read the exact sense of this sameness with care, and the Gaudiya and Ramanuja lines do not read it alike. Last, Krishna says that knowledge is a quality of prakriti, which fits the earlier teaching that sattva is knowing. Why teach this here? Uddhava has heard that the schools count the tattvas differently. Krishna answers the worry underneath: counting is not the point, and the self is not found by counting alone. It asks of Uddhava that he go to a knower and listen, and not spin more theories.

A tag sticks out of the back of your collar all morning. You cannot see it, however hard you look, and someone behind you has to say so. The tag is the self you cannot see on your own; the friend is the knower who shows it to you.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and write down one thing about yourself you have never been able to settle, such as why a certain remark angers you. 2. Tomorrow, ask one person who knows you well to tell you honestly what they see in it. Listen to the end without answering. 3. If you have a teacher or a text you trust, read one page of it this week, slowly, with the same question in mind. 4. Afterward, notice which part you could not have seen alone.

A woman is packing up her late mother's kitchen when her brother says, quietly, that she has been snapping at everyone since the funeral. She had not noticed. She felt only tired and busy, and thought her tone was ordinary. The verse speaks to that moment. The one who is inside a state is the worst placed to see it, and Krishna teaches that this is not a personal failing but the way ignorance works. So the first step is to let the brother's remark land and not argue it away. The second is to ask him what exactly he has heard. The third is to treat his answer as knowledge handed over, not as an attack. In the text's terms, the clear knowing that follows belongs to sattva, a quality of prakriti, and the one who sees it is the witness. Ordinary experience agrees on the small point: people rarely see their own manner, and a trusted outside voice often catches what we miss. The verse does not promise that the knower will say only what is pleasant, that the grief will lift, or that any friend will do. The teaching asks for a knower who truly knows the truth, and that is a higher standard than a kind brother.
