Meaning · English

Prakriti is the gunas held in balance, and the gunas belong to prakriti, not to the self. Sattva, rajas and tamas are the causes of keeping, arising and ending. Here sattva is called knowing, rajas doing, and tamas not-knowing. When the gunas are stirred together, that stirring is time, own-nature, and the thread that runs through all.

Three words carry this. Guna is a strand, as in a strand of rope. Sattva comes from sat, what is, and means clarity. Rajas is the restless, coloured stirring that makes one reach and act. Tamas is the heavy dark that covers things over. Krishna tells Uddhava that prakriti, nature, is simply these three lying in balance, before anything moves. He then says the gunas are prakriti's and not the self's. Whatever clarity, restlessness or dullness passes through a person belongs to nature working in them. It is not who they are. He gives each its work. Sattva is knowing, rajas is doing, tamas is not-knowing. Through them things are kept, arise and end. When the balance is disturbed and the strands mix, that mixing is called time, own-nature, and the thread. The commentators take these as names for the one working of nature seen from three sides. Krishna says this because Uddhava has asked how the world is counted and what the self is among it all. The answer separates the two. The listener is asked to stop signing his name under every mood. Clarity, restlessness and dullness arrive as nature's movements, and the one who watches them is not made of them.

A rope is twisted from three thin strands. Each alone is weak, and none is the rope until they are twisted together. Nature is like that: clarity, restlessness and heaviness twist into every day, and the hand that looks at the rope is not one of the strands.

1. Three times today, at morning, midday and evening, stop for one minute and ask: is my mind now clear, restless or heavy? 2. Say it plainly in your head: "clarity is here" or "heaviness is here", not "I am dull". 3. Note what came just before, such as a meal, a hurry or a poor night's sleep. 4. Save any weighty decision for a time when the state is clear.

A taxi driver finishes a heavy lunch at two in the afternoon. His eyes droop, and a long airport fare is on offer. He feels he is simply lazy and no good for the day. The verse gives him another reading. Heaviness, restlessness and clarity are three states that come and go in anyone, and they are nature's, not his name. So he names the state, tamas just now, and does the ordinary things: water, a short walk, ten minutes in the open air. He turns the fare down for the moment and decides again when his head has cleared. Ordinary experience agrees that a heavy meal and a short night dull judgment, and that the dullness lifts. The verse does not promise that tiredness vanishes once it is named. It does not replace rest. If the heaviness stays for weeks, or comes with low mood or breathlessness, a doctor should see him. The teaching is only that the state is not the man.
