At the beginning of creation, nature, which takes the form of both cause and effect, holds the qualities beginning with clarity. The unmanifest Person looks on. The elements, beginning with the first unmanifest evolute, are changed by that glance and gain their power. Joined together by the strength of nature, they bring forth the cosmic egg.

Three words carry the teaching. Prakriti is nature, from pra, forth, and kri, to make: the making power, which is both cause and effect. Purusha is the Person, the witness, who is not made. Avyakta means unmanifest, not yet shown. Krishna tells Uddhava how creation begins. Prakriti holds the qualities, sattva and the rest, from the earlier verses. Purusha, unmanifest, only looks. The elements, starting with the first of nature's evolutes, are altered by that look and gain the strength to act. Left apart, they do nothing. Prakriti then binds them together, and what they build is an anda, an egg: the whole ordered universe in one shell. Krishna gives this after counting the elements in so many ways. The counts differ, but the question underneath is one: how do separate parts become a world? His answer is that they work only when joined, and only when watched by the Person. The commentators take the looking as the witness's mere presence, not labour. The teaching asks Uddhava to see that he is neither the parts nor their joining. He is the one who looks.

A lotus bud sits shut in the pond before dawn. Its petals open by their own nature, yet only when the sun's light falls on them. Nature's elements are the petals, the Person's glance is the sunlight, and the opened flower is the world.

1. Tonight, for two minutes, sit and notice your breathing, your heartbeat and your hands resting, all going on without your instruction. 2. Say quietly to yourself, "I am watching this, not doing it." 3. Tomorrow, while you wash or eat, notice how many separate parts of you work together in one small act, and who it is that notices.

A father sits awake at three in the morning with his newborn daughter on his chest. He watches her breathe, her fingers curl and her mouth search. Nobody told those parts to cooperate, and he cannot direct them either. Krishna's account fits this moment step by step. The parts, taken singly, are only parts. They act as one body because they are joined and held together. Over them stands a watcher who does not do the work. Seeing it so, the father can stop trying to control her breathing and simply keep watch, which is what the text asks of the witness. He can set down the feeling that he must make everything happen. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: the body's organs work together without anyone running them. The verse does not stop his worry, and it does not replace the paediatrician. If her breathing sounds wrong or she is feverish, he calls for help. The teaching itself concerns the witness and the world's making, as Krishna gives it. It is not a method for caring for a baby.
