Seven are the constituents, some say. Of these, five are the objects, beginning with space. Knowledge, the self, is the support of both. From it come the body, the senses and the breaths. Six, say others: the five elements, and the sixth is the Person beyond them. Joined with these, which were born of himself, he made this world and entered it. Four, say others: fire, water and food, and the self. From these all that is born is born, for birth belongs to whatever is made of parts.

Krishna is giving Uddhava three more ways the teachers count the building blocks of the world. The key word is dhatu, a constituent, from dha, to place or hold: what a thing is made of and rests upon. Behind it stands tattva, a count of the real things, literally 'that-ness'. A third word is purusha, the Person, the conscious one, set apart from what is made. The first count is seven. Five are the elements, beginning with space. The sixth is knowledge, the knowing power. The seventh is the self, the one who knows, and it holds both the elements and the knowing. From it come the body, the senses and the breaths. The second count is six. The five elements are joined by the Person beyond them. Krishna says that Person, joined with what came from himself, made this world and then entered it. The third count is four: fire, water and food (the earth), with the self. Everything that is born comes from these. The last line gives the reason that holds all three counts together. Whatever has parts must be born, because a thing made of parts is a thing put together. Uddhava has asked why the teachers disagree. Krishna answers by showing that the counts differ because each teacher stops at a different place. Each count still points at the same two things, what is made and the one who knows. The commentators read it this way. What he asks of the listener is to stop treating a different number as a different truth.

A wedding list can count the same family as twenty-two people, or five households, or three generations. Nobody is missing from any count. The counts differ because each one groups the same people for a different purpose, as the teachers group the same world and the same self.

1. Tonight, pick one ordinary thing: your own hand, or a cup of tea. 2. Describe it in three ways, out loud or on paper: by its parts, by what it is made of, and by what it does. 3. Notice that each description is true and none cancels the others. 4. Next time you hear two people disagree on a count, ask which purpose each is counting for, before asking who is wrong.

A man sits in a hospital corridor, holding a report about his mother. The heart doctor lists her trouble one way. The kidney doctor lists it another way, with different words and a different number of things to watch. He begins to wonder which of them is right. The verse changes the question. Each doctor is counting the same woman for a different purpose, and the count follows the work. A chemist would count her in elements. A physiologist would count her in organ systems. None of these counts is false, and no one of them is the whole person. So he can ask each doctor what their list is for, and what it leaves out, and keep both lists in his hands. The text also gives its own reason for the counting. It says whatever is made of parts is born, and that the knowing self is the support of all the parts. That is the text's teaching, said as its teaching. The limit is plain. Understanding why the counts differ does not make the report better, and it does not replace the doctors' judgment about her care.
