Even a devotee of mine who is troubled by the objects of the senses, and has not yet mastered his senses, is for the most part not overpowered by them, because his devotion is bold and ripe. As a blazing fire with towering flames turns firewood to ash, so devotion that has me for its object, Uddhava, burns away sins entirely.

Three words carry the teaching. Indriya are the senses, and ajitendriya describes someone whose senses are not yet conquered. Vishaya are the sense objects, the tastes, sights and sounds that pull at us. Pragalbha means bold, grown, sure of itself, the opposite of timid or half-hearted. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Krishna begins with an honest picture. His devotee is still harassed by the senses. He has not mastered them. Yet Krishna says that, for the most part, such a person is not overcome, because his bhakti has grown bold. The words 'for the most part' admit that the struggle is real. The strength comes from where the heart is attached, not from the senses having gone quiet. Then comes the second half. A well-fed fire with high flames does not pick through the wood. It reduces every log to ash. Krishna says devotion directed to him does the same to sins, and the word is 'entirely', with nothing left over. The commentators read 'having me as its object' as the whole point: the devotion works because of where it is aimed. This answers a worry Uddhava would have. If the senses are not yet won, is the path closed? Krishna says no. It asks the listener to let devotion grow strong, and to trust it more than the grip of a craving.

A small child walks through a crowded market holding her mother's hand. Stalls shout, toys glitter, sweets are piled high, and she looks, even reaches, but she is not carried off. The hand she holds is devotion. The stalls are the senses, and the grip decides where she ends up.

1. Pick one pull that tugs at you most in the evening, such as a snack, a phone or a shop on your route. 2. When it rises, name it silently: 'there is the pull.' Do not fight it. 3. Turn to Krishna for one minute: say his name or picture his face, whichever is easier. 4. Notice, when the minute ends, whether the pull is as strong. Do this for a week and note what changes.

A man is walking home after a long day, three weeks into giving up drinking. The off-licence light is on, his feet slow, and his mouth already remembers the taste. Krishna's teaching meets him in steps. First, it says the pull does not mean he has failed; the devotee is described as still troubled by the senses. Second, it points to what he is holding, not what he is resisting: a love bold enough to be the stronger attachment. So he names the pull, says the name he loves, and keeps walking. Ordinary experience agrees that a craving rises and then eases, and that a strong attachment to something loved loosens a weaker one. The teaching also speaks of devotion burning away sins entirely. That is the text's own claim about devotion, said as its teaching. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise that the craving will not return tonight, and it does not replace a doctor or a support group where drink, or any habit, has become a dependence.
