Dishonor Worse Than Death

Bhagavad Gita 2.34

Meaning · English

People will speak of your lasting infamy for ages. And for one who has been respected, infamy is worse than death.

Three words carry the verse. Akirti is the opposite of kirti, which is good name, fame, standing. So akirti is a bad name, infamy. Sambhavita comes from a root meaning to honour or think well of. It names a person whom others already hold in esteem. Marana is simply death. Krishna tells Arjuna that people will go on speaking of his disgrace, and that the talk will not fade quickly. For someone who has been looked up to, he says, that disgrace is heavier than dying. The reason he gives comes from Arjuna's own position. Arjuna is a famous warrior, and his whole life has been built on being trusted. If he walks away from the battle, the people who knew him will remember that one act in place of everything else. Krishna is pressing on a fear Arjuna already has, the fear of what the world will say. He does not tell Arjuna to chase fame. He points out that a man of standing cannot treat his own reputation as small, and that quitting here would cost him the very thing he has spent his life earning. Shankara reads the line as a plain warning about how a respected man will be spoken of. Ramanuja takes it as one more reason, in a string of reasons, why turning from the fight serves no good end.

A white shirt with one ink stain on the chest. The wearer may have kept it clean for years, but across a crowded room the eye goes straight to the stain. A respected name is like that shirt: long care behind it, and one visible mark that people keep pointing to.

1. Tonight, write down one thing you have been avoiding mainly because of what people might say. 2. Next to it, write what the act itself asks of you, leaving out anyone's opinion. 3. Tomorrow, each time you picture someone judging you, make a small tally mark on paper. Look at the count in the evening and see which fears were about real people and which were imagined.

A man in a small town is known as the one who settles quarrels. Now he is asked to say, in front of others, that his old friend took money that was not his. He lies awake. He does not mainly think about the friend or the truth. He thinks about what the tea stall will say for years. Krishna's words name this exactly: the talk lasts, and for a person who has been respected it feels worse than loss. In that moment the verse lets him see what is actually pulling at him. It is fear of a name being stained, and it is a separate matter from what the act asks of him. Seeing that, he can ask which weight he is carrying, and he can weigh it openly instead of being pushed by it. Ordinary experience confirms that shame can hurt more than a physical blow, and that people go quiet to avoid it. The verse does not promise the talk will stop, that the friend will forgive him, or that the worry will vanish. Hurt over a lost reputation is real, and speaking to someone trusted helps when it will not lift.
