Mistaken for Fear

Bhagavad Gita 2.35

Meaning · English

The great warriors will think you left the battlefield out of fear. Those who once held you in high esteem will watch you fall in their regard, your worth to them made light.

Three words carry this. Maha-rathas are the great chariot-fighters, each said to match ten thousand ordinary soldiers. Bahu-mata means much-thought-of, held in high regard. Laghava comes from a root for lightness, so it means a lowering of weight or value. Krishna tells Arjuna that these men, who now weigh him heavily, will see him as someone who ran from the field out of fear. In their eyes his worth will thin out. Notice whose judgment Krishna names. He does not speak of the crowd. He speaks of the finest fighters, the people whose opinion Arjuna has earned and cares about most. Their reading would be wrong about his reason, since Arjuna is grieving, not afraid, but they would still think it. Krishna uses this to answer the problem Arjuna has raised: that stepping back looks like gentleness. He says that to those who know war it will look like fear. Krishna asks Arjuna to see how his refusal will be read before he settles on it. Shankara takes these arguments as pitched at ordinary duty and worldly judgment, ahead of the deeper teaching. Ramanuja reads them as steadying Arjuna to act on his duty. Madhva reads them as part of the call to do that duty as service to the Lord.

A baker has opened at dawn for thirty years. One market morning the shutter stays down, and the regulars decide he has lost his nerve. Years of trust thin out in a single morning. The baker is Arjuna, the regulars are the great warriors, and the shutter is his refusal to fight.

1. Today, before you step back from something hard, such as a meeting, a chore or a conversation, ask yourself whether it is fear or a real reason. 2. Name the person whose opinion you would most hate to lose. Picture how they would read your choice. 3. Write one sentence giving your true reason. Check that it holds up if said aloud. 4. Notice whether the picture of their judgment changes what you do, or only how you feel.

A man in his sixties has kept the accounts for the neighbourhood temple committee for twenty years. A heated meeting begins and he gets up to leave early. Halfway to the door he knows the others will say he ran from the argument. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna names the exact cost: the people who respected him will read his exit as fear, and their regard for him will grow lighter. First, the man can see that the reading is coming whether or not it is true. Second, he can ask what his real reason is. Perhaps he is tired, or perhaps he is afraid. Third, he can decide whether to stay, or to leave and say plainly why. Ordinary experience confirms that people fill silence with the worst explanation. The verse does not promise that the committee will understand him, or that his standing will survive the night. Krishna says only that the judgment of those who know him best will count, and that Arjuna should look at it squarely before he chooses.
