Books Without Knowing

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 43.36

Meaning · English

So do not suppose that anyone becomes a knower of Brahman merely by studying the scriptures. Reading them alone does not make a person one who knows.

Two words carry this. Brahmana here means one who knows Brahman, the reality behind everything, not simply a person of a certain birth. Adhyayana means study. Its root sense is going over a text again and again until it is held in memory. Sanatsujata tells King Dhritarashtra that this going-over, by itself, does not make a person a knower. The word 'therefore' ties this to what came just before. If knowing is shown in a life of truth and kept vows, then reading cannot stand in for it. A man can recite a hundred verses and still live as if none of them were true. That is the link to the sage's answer about death. Dhritarashtra lies awake afraid of dying. Sanatsujata is steering him away from the idea that death is an event to be solved with the right text. He treats it as a forgetting: a person goes through life with the words in his head and loses the thing they point to. So he warns against taking possession of words for possession of knowledge. A king surrounded by learned priests could easily make that mistake. The warning is aimed at him, and at anyone who feels safe because they have read enough.

A man memorizes a whole manual on swimming, every stroke and breath, and stands at the edge of the pool sure he can swim. The manual is the scripture. The water is the living knowing that only shows when he gets in.

1. Pick one line you already know by heart, from any scripture or saying you respect. 2. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes and ask whether any part of today was lived by that line, or whether you only remember it. 3. Notice one moment you can name, even a small one. 4. Tomorrow, choose one ordinary moment, such as answering a message or a meal, and act on the line there.
