Dream and Waking Worlds Are Equally Unreal

The story · English
Once more the king, Mahasena, spoke to the sage's son. He said, "Master, the example you gave does not fit. A dream, or a magic show, or an emptiness may seem real for a while, but this waking world is true. It gets things done. Nothing contradicts it, and it lasts. How can it be like a dream?" The wise son of the sage answered, "Listen, king. You say the example does not fit, but this is the same confusion you have inside a dream, where the dream world looks solid too. Does a dream tree not give shade then? Does it not ease the traveller's heat, and feed dream people with its fruit? When, in a dream, was the dream world contradicted, or found unstable?"
"Perhaps you will say that waking contradicts it all. Then listen. Is the whole waking world not cancelled in deep sleep? You may say it comes back the next day. But the dream, too, has its continuity, and you may say it does not seem to continue. Yet even in waking, where is the continuity in something that appears new? And if you say it appears elsewhere, then in a dream too continuity appears, whenever things seem steady. If you call that continuity false, so it is in waking." Then he pressed further. "Look closely. Body, tree, river, lamp, all change from moment to moment. How could their continuity be real?"
"Even mountains do not keep one form into the next moment. Rats, termites, boars and streams are always wearing them away. Mountains, oceans and lands all change every instant. So the continuity of waking and of dream is the same kind, limited and partial. A complete continuity is almost never found in things that are made." The king offered, "Their cause stays, the earth and the rest." The son replied, "That cause appears in dreams as well, since earth and the rest appear there. You say a dream is contradicted by waking, while waking is never contradicted. But contradiction only means not appearing, and in deep sleep the whole world does not appear."
"If contradiction means seeing proof against a thing, then listen. Those who are deluded, like you, have no such proof against the waking world. Only those who have known what is known and knowable do. So this whole show of things stands just like a dream. A long time can appear in a dream, with no difference felt. What is uncontradicted, useful and lasting is true of dream things too, and equally of waking things. Just as waking feels like waking, a dream feels like waking inside it. So, king, where is the difference? If you can grieve for no one in a dream, why do you not mourn those dream relatives?" He added, "The world seems true only through our imagining. Imagine emptiness, and it turns empty."
"Imagination grows firm when nothing proves otherwise, and then it seems true. Here is an example you have seen yourself. Come, let us walk around this mountain." Taking the king by the hand, he circled the rock and returned with him. Then he said, "King, you have seen this mountain. It is only a league around. Yet inside it lies a wide, clear world. One day in the mountain world is twelve hundred million years here, and you have lived them. Tell me which is true and which is false." There was no way to tell, as with two different dreams. "So know this world is made of imagining. Left unimagined, it fades in a moment. Put your grief aside, for the world is like a dream. See yourself as awareness, the wall behind the dream pictures, a mirror. Know it as the mirror of waking pictures too, and be glad at heart, king, very soon."
