Meaning · English

The divine is of eight kinds, the animal-born is fivefold, and the human is of one kind only. This, in brief, is the creation made of the elements.

Samkhya has just described the creation of the inner life. Now it asks a plainer question: what kinds of bodies are there? Bhautika sarga, 'creation made of the elements', means the world of physical bodies built from the five gross elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. Samkhya sorts these bodies into three bands. Gaudapada's commentary supplies the lists. The divine (daiva) band has eight kinds: beings of Brahma, of Prajapati, of Soma the moon, and of Indra, then the celestial musicians called Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the Rakshasas and the Pishachas. The animal band, called tairyagyona, 'born moving crosswise', has five kinds: tame animals, wild animals, birds, creeping things, and plants, which do not move. The human band has one kind. That makes fourteen. Samkhya has no creator God, so even the gods are products of prakriti, nature. They are not its makers. Gaudapada ends by noting that the three gunas, nature's strands of clarity, activity and inertia, are present in all three worlds. The next verse, he says, will state which strand dominates where.

Picture a potter's shed with one heap of clay. From it come lamps, water jars, toys and roof tiles, each with its own shape and use, and none made of anything the others lack. The fourteen kinds of being are the shapes. The clay is the five elements. Gods, beasts, plants and people differ in form. Samkhya holds they are cut from the same stuff.

Biology also sorts living things, but by shared descent rather than by element or rank. Its tree of life has no place for Rakshasas or Gandharvas, and there is no evidence that such beings exist. Some points do match. Chemistry agrees that every organism is built from the same small set of elements. Counting plants among living beings fits modern biology. Calling humans a single kind fits too, since all living people belong to one species. The deeper Samkhya claim sits elsewhere. Consciousness belongs to purusha, the witness, and not to the body. Philosophy of mind still debates which creatures have experience. Most researchers grant it to many animals. The question for plants is open and usually answered no. The hard problem, why any matter is accompanied by experience at all, remains unsolved.
