Three Strands by Level
Samkhya Karika 54
Meaning · English
Above, creation is rich in sattva. At the root, it is rich in tamas. In the middle, it is rich in rajas. So it runs, from Brahma down to a blade of grass.
What makes one kind of being different from another? Samkhya answers with the three gunas, the strands from which all of prakriti, changing nature, is woven. Sattva is clarity and lightness. Rajas is drive and restlessness. Tamas is heaviness and dullness. The verse speaks of which strand abounds at each level, which implies the other strands are present too. Above, sattva prevails. At the root, tamas prevails. In the middle, rajas prevails. The range covers everything, from Brahma, the highest being, to a blade of grass. Gaudapada reads 'above' as the eight orders of gods, 'the root' as animals down to plants and other unmoving things, and 'the middle' as humans. He stresses that the other two strands are never absent anywhere. Because rajas dominates in people, he concludes, human life is mostly pain. Brahma sits inside creation as a product of nature, not its maker. Classical Samkhya argues without a creator God.
Shake a jar of pond water and set it on a shelf. After an hour the top is nearly clear, the bottom is thick silt, and the middle stays cloudy and still swirling. Every layer is the same water and holds some of everything. Only the mix differs. Samkhya's levels of being are layers like that: one nature, three strands, different proportions.
Modern biology does not rank living things on a ladder. Evolution describes a branching tree, and no species is higher in clarity than another. A grass plant is as fully adapted to its life as a person is to theirs. There is no evidence for orders of gods above us, so the top tier lies outside what science can test. The gunas themselves have no modern match, because they are not measurable quantities. Where the idea does land is in psychology. Human minds are unusually restless. People plan, compare, worry and replay the past, and much distress comes from this churning rather than from bodily pain. Psychologists study rumination and craving closely. Samkhya's link between restless activity and suffering sits close to that, though modern accounts treat it as a feature of minds, not of a cosmic tier.
