Nature Working for Another

Meaning · English
So this whole making, from the great principle down to the gross elements, is prakriti's work. It is begun for the freedom of each purusha, for another's sake, as though for her own.
The question behind this: if the world unfolds by itself, what is it for? Samkhya answers that everything that changes serves something that does not. Prakriti is nature, all that changes. Purusha is the witness, pure consciousness, and Samkhya counts one for each being. Gaudapada lists the chain the sutra compresses. From prakriti comes mahat, the great principle of intellect. From mahat comes ahamkara, the sense of 'I'. From that come the subtle elements and the eleven senses and organs. From the subtle elements come the five gross elements. All of it has one aim, the release of each purusha. Gaudapada names two stages of that aim. First, purushas meet sounds and other objects across the worlds. Then they come to see that the gunas, nature's three strands, are not the purusha, and that seeing frees them. He compares prakriti to a friend who sets aside his own interests to do a friend's work. The purusha repays nothing. Prakriti only looks as if she acts for herself.
Picture a lamp left on in a room where someone is reading. It burns steadily and looks busy. It does not read the page and takes nothing from the story. When the reader closes the book, the lamp is switched off. Samkhya sees prakriti the same way: always working, getting nothing back, and finished once the one it served is free.
The nearest modern debate is about purpose without a mind. Biology explains a great deal of apparent design, eyes and instincts for example, through natural selection, with no intention behind it. Samkhya also denies a designing God and gives unconscious nature a direction. The two part ways on what that direction is. In evolution it is survival and reproduction. In Samkhya it is the freedom of consciousness. Mainstream physicalism holds that consciousness arises from matter, which reverses Samkhya's order, where matter exists for consciousness. Neuroscience maps closely how experience depends on the brain. Why any experience is felt at all, the hard problem of consciousness, is still open. Dualist views like Samkhya's are a minority today but are still argued seriously. The claim that nature as a whole aims at liberation has no scientific test.
