Nature Works Without Knowing

As milk, which knows nothing, flows for the growth of the calf, so primal nature moves for the release of the conscious self.

The question behind this is an old objection. Prakriti, nature, is unconscious. Purusha, the witness, is pure consciousness that does nothing. So how can nature work toward a goal, the freedom of the purusha, when it cannot know any goal? Samkhya answers with milk. Milk is ajna, unknowing. It has no idea a calf exists. Yet it forms and flows for the calf's growth. In the same way, Samkhya holds, pradhana, another name for prakriti as the first source of all that changes, moves for the sake of the purusha's vimoksha, its release. Gaudapada fills in the steps. Grass eaten by the cow turns into milk. The milk builds up the calf. Once the calf is grown, the flow stops. That last step matters. Nature's work has a direction without anyone intending it, and it ends when the purpose is met. Later commentators such as Vachaspati Mishra draw the conclusion that the school needs no creator God to steer the world toward freedom.

A scab forms over a cut on your knee. Nothing in it knows anything. It hardens, shields the raw skin, and holds there while the tissue underneath repairs. Then, one morning, it simply falls away. That is the shape of the claim: an unthinking process that serves a purpose beyond itself and withdraws once that purpose is reached.

Biology has its own version of this puzzle and largely solved it for living things. Milk really does flow without knowing: suckling triggers the let-down reflex, and production winds down after weaning. Evolution explains why such mechanisms look purposeful without any mind designing them. Purpose without intention is now a familiar idea. Samkhya's claim goes further, though. It says nature as a whole works for the release of consciousness. Physics and biology describe no such aim in nature, and there is no evidence for one. The other half, a consciousness distinct from matter, belongs to philosophy of mind. Dualism of this kind is a minority view today, but neuroscience has not explained why there is experience at all. That hard problem remains open.
