Meaning · English
As people take up actions to put an end to a longing, so the unmanifest sets to work for the freeing of the purusha.
What makes nature act at all, and what would make it stop? Samkhya answers with an ordinary fact about people. When someone feels a longing (autsukya, a restless eagerness for something), they act. That acting has a built-in end: it lasts only until the longing is gone. The avyakta, 'the unmanifest', is prakriti, nature, in its unformed root state. Samkhya holds that it moves the same way, toward one end: the vimoksha, or release, of the purusha, the pure witnessing consciousness. Gaudapada reads it closely. A person with a longing goes here and there, and once the task is done, turns back. Prakriti likewise completes the purusha's twofold purpose. The first is experience of sound and the other objects of the senses. The second is seeing the difference between the gunas, the three strands that make up nature, and the purusha itself. With both done, it withdraws. The comparison is about shape, not feeling: activity that has an aim, and that ends because its aim is met.
A thirsty person at a desk gets up, walks to the kitchen, fills a glass and drinks. Then they sit down again, and nothing pulls them back to the kitchen. The getting up is prakriti's whole unfolding. The drink is the purusha's purpose fulfilled. The sitting down is nature's withdrawal, once there is nothing left for it to do.
The pattern is familiar to psychology. Drive-reduction theories describe behaviour as starting from a felt need and easing once the need is met. Much everyday motivation fits that shape, though curiosity and play show that not all action works by reducing a lack. The harder part is Samkhya's extension of purpose to unconscious nature. Physics describes matter through laws and causes, not aims. Biology explains goal-like behaviour in organisms through natural selection, sometimes calling it teleonomy: apparent purpose with no one intending it. Samkhya makes a different kind of claim, that nature as a whole is ordered toward the release of consciousness. No experiment can test that either way. Whether the universe has any purpose at all remains an open question in philosophy, not a settled one.
